Independent Medical Practice Resources And Health Care

By Ann Meyer

Graduates from medical school often have two options, join a hospital or clinical team, or open a private practice. It should be noted that for those whom can open a private practice, it could very well be a move in the right direction. For, the association of independent medical practice resources also known as AID is currently trying to stop acquisitions, sales and take overs in the private sector.

Due to a number of practices having been taken over by equity firms and hospitals, private practices across the country are facing conditions which can only be labeled as critical. For, the doctors whom worked so hard to open these private practice locations often become employees of the clinics and hospitals which acquired the practice. As such, it is a trend which is neither beneficial or healthy for clients or those working in the field of health care.

When this happens, studies have shown that health care quality often goes down while prices go up. Whereas, access to care can be limited or lost, thus leaving communities more vulnerable to disease and sickness and doctors less satisfied. For, while some may be left sick and dying, others will not be able to acquire vaccinations to prevent getting sick in the future.

Studies by the group have shown that consolidation of health care providers has also resulted in a price increase of 20% to 40% in American Health Care Insurance premiums. In a country where many individuals can not afford health care, even through the Affordable Care Act created during the Obama administration, the association sees this as unacceptable.

Having members in over half of the American health care marketplace, the association hopes to raise awareness among doctors about the negative impact created by this trend. For example, to paraphrase Robert Wood Johnson, it is stated that the consolidation does nothing to improve the quality of healthcare or costs though is motivated by reducing competition and creating bargaining power for the future.

The association was established in 2013 by two certified public accountants whom were frustrated by the negative impacts the trend was having on doctors, clients and the overall health care system. In the years since AID was established, the association has represented the voices of doctors all over the country with regards to saving the private practice sector. In doing so, it is hoped that a number of private practices will be saved along with the jobs of those working in the area.

Doctors, clients and others can discover more about AID, along with the resources and services provided by visiting the organization's website. In addition, there are a number of videos which have been placed on the site to inform individuals on steps necessary to help slow, if not stop these take overs. After which, the organization hopes new graduates as well as those whom have become employees of clinics and hospitals can either open or return to the private practice sector.

In all cases, these acquisitions and take overs are hurting the already ailing medical field in the United States. Whether due to out-of-reach prescription costs, high insurance premiums or a lack of medical staff, there are a number of people for whom treatment is not available other than through an emergency room or free clinic. As a result, the number of sick and dying which can not receive care will only continue to rise in the future.
