Facts Regarding The International Medical Students And Young Physician Program

By Larry Howard

The United States remains one of the most attractive countries for medical education and work for many foreign trained professionals. While many international graduates are looking to emigrate fully to the States, others just which to have a bit of clinical experience which they can take back to their countries. In this article, we will look at the international medical students and young physician program.

When coming to the United States, there are a number of requirements that must be met. Some of them are general and happy to any immigrant or tourist while others are specific to medical personnel. It is important that one understands these requirements and meets them to avoid a rejection of their application. Some differences exist in the process for temporary students and physicians intending to move permanently.

Students can apply for observerships in US hospitals either before or after their graduation. An observership is simply a form of attachment in a clinical area where the individual gets to learn first hand from attending physicians. They also get to interact with patients as they would if practising in the country. This experience is important for doctors that have plans of applying for residency in the country.

One is required to be a student in a medical school or to have graduated from the same to be eligible for an observership position. They will also need to get certification from the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, ECFMG. Most hospitals and universities allow for applications to be made online. The available programs will often be advertised on hospital websites.

One should understand that these positions are quite competitive as they attract interest from physicians all over the world. It is important, therefore, to make sure that the application is written in a convincing manner and does not leave out the important details. A daily filled application form should accompany the cover letter. The desired rotation should be clearly stated and so should the desired period of stay.

Other requirements relate to the immigration process. They include, for instance, an updated immunization record, copies of passport and visa, health insurance certificate and a recent passport photograph. When in doubt, one will be well advised to contact their prospective university or hospital on what exactly is needed of them.

Physicians trained in other countries and intending to come to the United States have an opportunity to do so. The residency program allows them to apply for a position in the specialty of their choice. However, before making this application, they first must undertake the United States Medical Licensing Examination, USMLE. The exam is done in a number of countries but some aspects are exclusively conducted within the States.

The residency positions in American hospitals are extremely competitive. The competition is even stiffer for some disciplines such as surgery and psychiatry. IMGs are in direct competition with locally trained doctors. The latter understand the system better hence have an edge. An IMG may need to make applications to multiple hospitals to increase the chances of getting a spot.
