Does Racism In Sports Media Still Exist

By Mattie MacDonald

By definition, racism is the hate of one person by another on the base of either the language they speak or the tone of their skin. The one that usually expresses this type of negative feeling usually presumes that because they are of a certain ethnical origin, they are superior compared to others. It has roots dug deep all through history. For that, racism in sports media is still a very big problem.

In most cases, the main aim of media is bringing people from all corners of life together. This is due to the fact that through the televisions, radio and even newspapers, humanity can be able to relate to the same happenings in the world and express their views and learn on how other people think. Nevertheless, this world is full of racist and in sport; this becomes a platform where hate is very pronounced.

A good example is in social networks which has come up in recent days. Here, people feel free to express their opinions in whatever way they like. They assault the players on these sites, calling them names and sometimes go as far as referring them using their real names. This is a huge setback to the sportsmen who are sometimes discouraged.

Another burning issue is that of having adequate translators. During the major league games, there is scarcity of interpreters to translate the proceedings of the game to players. This does not happen to all the languages but just specific ones which brings in the question as to why such problems face only a certain linguistics.

The information that is delivered to the various recipients all depends on who is giving out such information. How deliverance is done can affect the ideas that are put in the heads of people. Since most the reporters are white, they tend to pass racial information majorly when it comes to black athletes. Some go to as far as saying how much they do not work hard for what they have and this is not right as the public now believes these speculations.

On a more positive note, this issue in the sports sector is going on the low. Comparison cannot be made like in the early years where even people went as far as killing their team members due to hate. The media has made steps to come up with ways and means to see to it that the use of hateful language is kept on the low and peace in maintained.

It is said that broadcasting can build and destroy. There are certain athletes who are just a darling to the public eye and because they are of a certain ethnical background there are those that are not happy about that. They just and patiently wait for one to screw up in the slightest manner so that they can escalate the issue and drug their name all through the mud until they are no more.

Racism runs very deep in sport media. In a bid to solve the issue of negative ethnicity, it is a wise step to balance the media crew in terms of race. This avoids domination of a particular race which triggers hate. When they are all balanced, it will be much harder for them to put across negative statements about others.
