Woodworking Hints And Tips For Solving Problems With Projects

By Nita McKinney

Contrary to the beliefs of many, wood is not a perfect, static building material. It may be true that some wood types have more stability than others. However, each type of wood has characteristics that would lead to woodworking problems if the carpenter does not prepare for them adequately. There are countless woodworking hints and tricks, and below are some of the most helpful.

The first tip is about is about the importance of table saw safety. When cross cutting on top of a table saw, the cut length should be set with a block clamped to the fence. The fence should never be used directly in order to avoid a board getting kicked right back at the worker.

A wood block should instead be attached to the fence right before the blade. A good example is when the woodworker is making a block with dimensions of one inch; he can set the scale such that it is bigger by that exact measurement.

Another guideline is utilizing tape to trap overflowing glue. The working pieces should not be stuck together using glue so as to prevent against staining from glue that overflows. This can be done by applying tape on the joint, and using a sharp knife to cut along it. This is followed by separation of the pieces, applying glue and then joining together the pieces. By doing so, overflowing glue stains the top, not the wood, and it later dries and the tape peeled.

Use of a stair gauge is the other guideline. Stair gauges are mainly used as crosscut guides as well as for laying out stair jacks. They are fixed to carpenters square whereby they will be helpful in marking notches. However, it is when using circular saw that this will give the best results, if they are both set on a single square tongue.

With the use of a drafting square, a carpenter is presented with better accuracy. There exist limited options if a square that is accurate in needed within a two or three feet range. It is no secret that drywall squares have high levels of inaccuracy and cumbersomeness. In addition, using a carpenters square involves a nagging task of setting them to the end of a work piece. Drafting squares come with remarkable accuracy that will definitely suit anyone who uses them.

Compared to clamps, hot glue holds things much better. When carpenters have to shape, cut, sand, finish or file something small, it is advisable to reach for their hot glue gun and stick the piece to a pedestal stick. Hot glue will hold virtually anything as good as any clamp or even better. When the project is done, it can be popped loose with a putty knife. However, care should be taken not to apply too much otherwise the piece may be broken or the wood torn out.

The above woodworking hints can be of help to any carpenter. There are tens of other tips, but those discussed above are the main ones that will make woodworking much easier.
