What Is Child Developmental Psychology?

By Lebie Moore

At infancy up to the age of one and half, a child usually enjoys what we label solitary play. Solitary play is characterised by self absorption with the own toys and failure to mingle and relate to other children. At this period, there is neither interaction nor concern to others point of view. Alternatively, at the age of 6 or 7 the child starts to make friends and interact in group games. By the time the child reaches teenage, the need to develop positive human relationship starts to flourish.

Basically, the sub-field of psychology that cocerns the study of how individuals relate to others from infancy to teenage in a continuous evolution of perception of simple to complex relationships is called developmental psychology.

Margaret and Butterworth 2012 referred to developmental psychology as the methodical study of progressive psychological changes that occur in human beings as they age. And even though it is considered as a relatively young science in the branch of psychology, it has proven its importance in more ways than one. This field entails the discovery of processes that concern the variations in behaviour during the gradual evolution of child's cognitive, social and other abilities.

One of the branches of developmental psychology is the cognitive development wherein there are significant theories paved by world great minds similar to Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. According to the theory of Jean Piaget, development changes in human beings are significantly associated by the way an individual organises his thought process along with its innate structure. On the other hand, according to Lev Vygotsky, advancement in learning and thought process is greatly motivated by how people interact with the social world.

Today, in the modern society where we live, there are many studies related to developmental psychology that confirm the significance of tuition agencies and the excellent tuition services in cognitive development of children. Needless to say this branch of psychology has already confirmed its immeasurable implications when it comes to improving child's growth in various aspects of his existence.
