Insomnia : What Other People Are Unaware Of

By Jovan Huyser

A large part of the population is affected by insomnia and other sleep disorders. For the mind and body to refresh and repair itself from day to day, adequate rest is imperative. Sleeplessness causes other disorders which influence the well-being and proper functioning of a person.

Insomnia is defined as being unable to fall asleep and/or being unable to stay asleep. Stress and psychological trauma may play a part in this condition or there may be physical causes. Chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, headaches and drowsiness during the day are all consequences of sleeplessness.

Insomnia can be a symptom of other disorders. Whatever the cause, being unable to get a refreshing night's rest is a problem for a great many people. Restless leg syndrome and sleep apnoea are two of only many disorders which may cause sleeplessness.

There are many who suffer from apnoea. This is characterised by the person momentarily ceasing to breathe. The airways temporarily collapse, blocking free passage of air. This may happen many times a night. The periods are very short but proper resting cycles are severely disrupted.

The outcome of apnoea is low levels of oxygen in the blood. There is a subsequent increase in levels of carbon monoxide. Bringing levels back to normal ranges places stress on the body. One of the treatments for apnoea is the wearing of a mask at night. These continuous positive air pressure masks (CPAP) continually force air into the airways.

A neurological condition which causes disrupted sleeping patterns is restless leg syndrome. There may be burning, itching or prickling sensations. Some sufferers say the sensation is of insects crawling over the skin. The legs may jerk involuntarily. This may wake a person. There is a continual need to change position to gain some relief.

These symptoms may be felt in one or both legs. The urge to continually move the legs can severely disrupt both day and night routines. Specific exercises can help once a diagnosis has been made. Restless leg syndrome may be linked to periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD).

Getting adequate and proper rest is essential if a person is to remain healthy. For those with insomnia and other sleep disorders, health professionals may recommend a polysomnography. This study produces a graph of brain activity while you are sleeping. Information about responses of the body during this period will enable a doctor to make an accurate diagnosis of why a person is not sleeping well.
