With Help From A Therapist Nyack Patients Can Deal With Their Problems

By Jennifer Reynolds

Life is hectic and everyone seems to be in a big rush all the time. Most people, even young people, are under tremendous pressure to perform well, to meet goals and to live up to the expectations of their parents and employers. It is no wonder that so many people struggle to cope from one day to the next. They become overwhelmed by the pace of live and the many demands made upon them. Thankfully, with help and guidance from a therapist Nyack citizens can learn to live balanced lives.

When patients first see a counselor they are seldom able to pinpoint the source of their negative feelings and their maladies. That is why most therapists will spend at least a few sessions doing little other than listening and asking probing questions. They may also insist upon a thorough medical check and in some cases the patient may need medication to cope in the short term.

Many therapists focus on patients that have to deal with severe trauma. Trauma can have several origins. Some patients lost a loved one, others lost their jobs and yet others had to endure extremely violent situations. In these cases the counselor has to help the patient to face the traumatic experience, to work through it and to learn to continue with life without allowing the trauma to dominate it.

Many patients feel isolated because they think that they are the only ones suffering from the maladies that plague them. That is why most therapists conduct group sessions. During these sessions, patients learn that they are not alone. There are others feeling the same, experiencing similar problems and thoughts. They are empowered to share their feelings and they often end up encouraging and supporting each other.

It can be tricky to find the right counselor. Many therapists know that not all patients will feel comfortable with them. That is why they often conduct at least one evaluation sessions to allow both the patient and the counselor to decide whether the relationship is likely to work out. If not, the patient will be referred to another therapist with a different approach.

Many patients think that once they enter therapy their problems will be solved quickly and efficiently by their therapists. This is certainly not the case. Patients must solve their own problems. The role of therapists is to guide them through a process of self examination and a discovery of solutions all by themselves. There are no quick magic tricks, recipes or cures to the problems of life.

There are so many people that never receive treatment because they think that it is a sign of weakness to see therapists. They reckon that each individual has to deal with his problems personally. They think that it is disadvantageous to admit a weakness. None of these preconceptions are true. It is most certainly not only weak people that see therapists.

Therapists can play a very important role in the lives of their patients. Many people see therapy as an ongoing process, often lasting for years. Therapists help them to remain focused and to verbalize their feelings and emotions in a non judgmental environment.
