Elements For Successful Job Embedded Professional Development

By William Meyer

In the modern world, skills are increasingly on demand to deliver the needs of organizations, clients, government, and society. On-the-job professional development is one of the most critical means through which students and new graduates gain critical skills to enable those needs. Different professions such as medical professionals, teachers, engineering and other legal professionals have requirements for students to undergo such training before they are admitted to the professional bodies. For instance, in the teaching profession, job placement is emphasized to produce excellent teachers capable of inculcating literacy in students. Job embedded Professional Development enhances imparting of skills, experience and competence from the gurus to the novice professionals.

The connection between the content used in teaching and the curriculum is crucial in the professional development. Whatever students are examined is based on the whole curriculum. So, when there is a mismatch of content, the entire practice becomes less effective for the achievement of students. A good combination of information from different sources enables covering of the whole syllabus.

There is a need for active learning with continuous assessment. Learning should be a continuous activity so that students get a good flow of information. Progressive learning enables the relation and interconnection between different topics of a curriculum. Moreover, a developmental assessments technique creates a good environment for independent student control on learning.

The teachers must have a deep knowledge and understanding of the content. They also must find suitable ways to deliver the content to the learners. Comprehensive professional development is beyond techniques and trainers have to become a subject matter adept. They also need to employ practical skills and demonstrations to create understanding among students.

If you decide to use other teaching strategies, how do you combine them into the practice? You must be moderate when you are doing this. Nobody will understand you if you keep on introducing different training tactics now and then. In fact, students can lose concentration. First, evaluate the methods and establish their effectiveness before adding them to the class. Also, present them one at a time.

Unity and teamwork is a vital aspect in the professional development program. As a teacher, you cannot know all tricks about teaching. Sometimes you will need the help of your colleagues to understand everything better. When you allow yourself to welcome ideas from other people, you also learn. If useful, you can also incorporate the lessons into your teaching.

Collaboration among teachers is a critical element that has to be observed throughout their practice. As you interact with one another, you get to learn new ideas daily. For instance, intermingling and cooperation are good avenues for learning new teaching techniques, understanding and appreciation of work. Moreover, it is through collaboration that you find support for one another.

Continuous and regular evaluation of performance is a vital factor to be considered in every step you make in training. It allows one to identify problems and find solutions. Also, when the learners have appreciated the use of a specific system, they will be comfortable to use them.
