Highlight Your Garden Features With Subtle Outdoor Lighting

By Marci Glover

When the nights start to draw in, a lot of people restrict the amount of time we spend outside. This is because they are not so sure of what, or who, is nearby and feel threatened. If our own personal outside space, such as the garden, is also poorly lit, then this also becomes an unsafe place.

We have all opened our front door and not been able to see the person standing on the porch very clearly. This is because there is no outdoor lighting to help us. If only for security reasons, it is essential that we have some form of lighting illuminating our outdoor spaces, however, the same lighting can be used to beautify the same areas.

These days there are many different kinds of lamps you can use outside. Some designs are extremely discreet, and no longer take the form of floodlights that used to dazzle people. If you have a walkway through your garden it would be a good idea to use lamps on the top of waist-high poles. To save on energy consumption, you can also get them so that they only work when somebody is nearby.

The type of lamps you use, and the way that they are powered, depends a lot on the location. If you are installing security lamps for the business, it is usually best to use a mains power supply due to the time that they will be on. If they are being installed in your garden, solar powered lamps should be adequate.

If you do not illuminate your outdoor spaces of your home, you will have to plan parties and barbecues so that they finish when the sun goes down. By installing subtle lights your parties could carry on well past sunset. Your guests would still be able to see each other, and the surrounding areas would be highlighted by well-positioned table and wall lamps.

If these lamps are positioned well, they could also make your home more secure. Depending on your needs, you could set them to come on at certain times of the day, or use a motion sensor so that they only come on as somebody approaches them. If you are planning to have your garden landscaped, that is the best time to plan the lighting so that they could be powered by cables that have been laid underground. If you are adding lighting to an existing garden, good use of solar powered lamps would be the best choice.

When you are choosing, and positioning, your lamps it is important that you take into consideration the area that it will be illuminating. You do not want them to dazzle people who are passing by, neither do you want them to leave very dark areas between the illuminated areas. This could be dangerous for passing motorists.

There are a lot of specialists who design outdoor areas who can help you in your choice and positioning of lamps, but this could be outside of your budget. An alternative method is to make use of the free standing solar powered lamps available, though these will initially be expensive, but will have minimal running costs. Lighting your outdoor areas can add both beauty and security, and also allow you to spend more time relaxing in your garden.
