Cases That Encourage Fire Retardant Coatings

By Essie Osborn

Fire can be quite a menace sometimes; it makes investments that have been accumulated in years to go down in shambles. That is why most materials need to be protected with fire retardant coatings. Building materials, executive cars, airplanes and other structures would be safer if they were fire proofed. In case of an outbreak, at least the harm will not be all that great.

Safety needs to be prioritized whenever a structure is being erected for whatever purpose. It is not enough to take an insurance cover for your property. It also pays to prevent it from the menace that can come from fire. Non conductors are preferred for these coatings. These should be installed by people with vast knowledge in this area so as to avoid mishaps. The installation of an electrical system should be thoroughly tested for the possibility of short circuiting.

Some of the coatings are in form of paint that is fireproof. If applied on wood, the wood becomes automatically tough and resistance to any scorching effect. Water based coatings work efficiently since fire can easily quench a flame if mixed with the right chemicals. However, the mixture is made in such a way that it becomes adhesive and able to stick to surfaces.

So long as the surface has good adhesion, it can easily be applied with these chemicals. A good product of this nature should be able to dry fast. It also must be non conductive. It also should be corrosion free and with a neutral charge. All these are qualities of water, making the best ingredient. The material, once protected, will be able to convert the fire energy into a non flammable heat that is harmless, since it cannot ignite.

Apart from buildings, vehicles, especially those used by VIPs need to be safeguarded. Accidents can occur anytime and it is only prudent if they can be prevented. When a vehicle gets involved in an accident, the fuel can easily be set aflame and this is deadly. However, if the proofing was well done then those in the vehicle will be spared the possible inconveniences.

Airplanes are also susceptible to danger. Given the many passengers that board them, they need precaution in their manufacture and configuration. If a coating can be found for them that will not be able to be set ablaze, then most of the deaths that normally result from wrong landings can be kept at bay. It is quite unfortunate for a plane to touch ground with people breathing in it, only to catch fire and kill everyone aboard. Fireproofing them can prevent such deaths.

The materials used for coating should however, meet some required standards. Apart from preventing the harm from flames, they also should be free of harmful and poisonous chemicals. Some chemicals are known to be non conductors of heat but are highly corrosive. Such should be avoided at all costs. Poison is more dangerous as it leaves longer lasting negative environmental impact than fires.

Since surfaces vary, manufacturers are called upon to consider variety. They should be flexible in terms of the various situations they can tackle. Things like mattresses are easily consumed by fire. Thus, they need to be well sealed and protected. Many structures are normally made of wood. The wooden parts are thus required to be well protected.
