Professional Norwalk CT Chiropractors Educate Community On Spinal Health

By Donna Beley

The professionals at the Norwalk chiropractor clinic offers tips to help maintain a healthy spine. Researchers estimate about 90 percent of all adults experience some type of back pain during their lives. Healthcare workers recommend following a few basic posture, lifting, and lifestyle guidelines in order to keep the back strong and healthy.

Officials with the American Chiropractic Association have released suggestions in eight categories. Among them are standing, lifting, sitting, reaching and bending, carrying, diet and exercise, and sleeping. Also, they suggest those who smoke quit.

When standing still, the following posture helps to alleviate stress and pressure in the back. When standing, bend the knees slightly, and keep one foot just behind the other. Do not stand while bending over for long periods of time. This position strains the muscles of the lower back and can cause pain.

While lifting, do not twist. When the body is twisted, the spine becomes especially vulnerable to injury, particularly if accompanied by lifting. If a heavy object needs to be moved, pushing it exerts less back stress than lifting it. The leg muscles should be utilized for pushing, not the back muscles.

A proper position for sitting involves the knees being kept a little higher than hips, holding the head up and back straight. Let the curve in the lower back hold its natural position. Don't allow either shoulder to droop or hunch over.

When a person sleeps on her or his side, keeping a pillow between knees, the pressure on the spine is reduced. If possible, do not sleep on the back. This position creates 50 pounds of pressure. If sleeping on the back, keeping a pillow under the knees will decrease the pressure to 25 pounds.

The Norwalk chiropractor also provides nutritional and fitness guidance. Regular exercise and balanced meals helps keep the body fit and strong. Individuals who are overweight are more susceptible to back problems.
